Let’s start by saying you don’t have to switch your energy provider – you simply should. Contrary to popular belief, choosing an energy supplier is actually pretty simple, and this is just the first one of all the myths that fly around the energy choice program. Let’s find the most common myths and truths about the process:

1. It’s too much hassle to switch your energy provider.
FALSE
Several energy suppliers are competing for your business, so we bet it won’t be an issue to find one to switch to. But, with so many suppliers and rates to pick from, how can you be sure you’re receiving the best price possible?
The process to switch your energy provider is straightforward: just tell us where you live, how many people live in your house or apartment, and your consumption habits. Once you’ve submitted your information, you can quickly and easily receive an estimate of how much your energy costs would be if you switched suppliers.
Once you get a supplier and an electricity rate that pleases you, you’re ready to go. Just choose it, enroll and enjoy a better rate from then on.
2. Switching requires a significant amount of time and effort.

FALSE
Like the last one, obtaining a quotation is as simple as entering your zip code into our website and pressing enter, then selecting the best plan for you. And if you want to switch your energy provider, all you have to do is give your new supplier your personal information, such as your name, address, and current meter reading.
They’ll handle everything else for you, keeping you up to date on the procedure and dealing with your former provider. We watch TV for four hours a day – you could switch at an ad break! 3. If I switch energy suppliers, my service will be interrupted.
FALSE
Every supplier out there has the same access to the pipes and poles that bring electricity to you. Therefore, if you switch your energy provider, independent of who you’re paying for it, will use the same infrastructure, and your service will not be disrupted.
If you switch your energy provider, there is no interruption in service, and you may go about your business as usual. Sunday barbecues, hot baths, and the latest episode of your favorite Netflix program are all still on the table. You may go about your business as if nothing is happening – when, in reality, you’ll be saving money on your energy costs!
4. I have to spend hours dealing and negotiating with my current supplier to let me go.
FALSE
No, not really. When you switch your energy provider, your new energy supplier will usually notify your existing one of your intention to switch and the date of their switchover. However, it is best to give them the last meter reading on switchover day to ensure that the switch goes as smoothly as possible and that you receive your final bill – which may include a refund to you – as soon as feasible.
Final bill delays can occur if your new provider takes a long time to share your last meter reading with them; therefore, it’s ideal for providing both energy suppliers the same meter reading on switchover day to keep everything going smoothly. Also, before you switch your energy provider, ensure you don’t have any payment debt, this will make the process much easier.
5. Fixed electricity rates are always cheaper
PARTIALLY FALSE
They’re not necessarily cheaper, and they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution. Why? Fixed electricity rates can help you budget around your energy consumption and avoid those obnoxious high energy bills when the variable rates are high due to a demand increase on the electricity grid – so 90% of the cases. However, locking your rates doesn’t always mean they’ll be the cheapest.
In the case of an overproduction of energy, the kWh prices can be lower & you can pay a higher rate if you decide to lock them just before. We know this sounds tricky; however, you can check our article about fixed vs. variable electricity rates. You’ll get a better chance to understand what’s best for your specific situation, and will get a chance to compare and get the lowest electricity rates out there.
6. Spring and Fall are the best seasons to switch your energy provider
MOSTLY TRUE
Energy prices tend to be higher during peak demand periods since available energy is scarce. When energy consumption peaks in a given location, local utilities usually turn to secondary energy sources to meet customer demand. We have an entire article talking about the best time to switch your energy provider, however here is a brief explanation:
During the months when temperatures are at their highest, energy demands are frequently at their highest. This leads to higher energy costs in much of the United States during the summer and winter seasons, notably in July, August, December, and January. People’s reliance on heating and cooling systems drives up demand during these months.
During the hot summer months, home air conditioners are often used all day and sometimes all night. As a result of the lower temperatures and fewer daylight hours in the winter, it’s usually a good idea to switch to a less costly plan before the winter months begin. The same happens before summer arrives.
